The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development sponsors Fair Housing Accessibility FIRST to promote Fair Housing Act compliance. Nearly 40 million multifamily buildings are subject to the FHA’s design and construction requirements.
As Program Manager for FHA FIRST, LCM provides technical guidance to the public through a comprehensive training curriculum, a toll-free Design and Construction Resource Center information line, and a website.
Training is an important part of the program. LCM provides free live training events and a series of webinars to architects, developers, contractors, code officials, property managers, landscape architects, and civil engineers. The instruction curriculum consists of 11 modules. Topics include: disability rights laws; FHA enforcement; accessible routes; accessible public and common-use areas; strategies for compliant kitchens and bathrooms; dwelling unit requirements; common design and construction violations and solutions; and making housing accessible through accommodations and modifications.
