UIC College of Medicine

University of Illinois College of Medicine

The UIC College of Medicine has long been a major force in medical education in Illinois. The College not only strives to be a leader in research and training, but also at the cutting edge of teaching environments. The College is beginning to implement a peer-based curriculum and needs spaces that support the curriculum. LCM developed studies for these new spaces within the College of Medicine.

Working closely with College leadership, LCM investigated converting existing spaces into peer-to-peer team-based learning environments while also re-imaging and modifying two lecture spaces. The goal was to create flexible and combinable rooms housing up to twelve students and faculty. Configuration flexibility and support of team learning activities was key. The exploration of Lecture 221 included dramatic changes to both the configuration and finishes creating break-out areas, while the focus in Lecture 423 was both re-imaging and maximizing seating capacity for large capacity events.
The study was a conceptual exercise to develop realistic options for presentation to potential donors. LCM presented a series of options with both two and three dimensional images supporting the fundraising effort, displaying an engaging vision of new learning environments using room shape, natural light, and color.
