Access Living, a not-for-profit Chicago based advocacy group that provides services and support for people with disabilities commissioned LCM Architects to plan and design their new headquarters building. Staffed with a large number of people with disabilities, the building was designed for a wide range of occupants and users and effectively combines “universal” and “green” building design to create a truly sustainable environment.

Described as “quiet modern” the building blends seamlessly into the surrounding neighborhood. The four-story masonry building features a curtain-wall with clear glass and expressed horizontal mullions fronting on Chicago Avenue. On the interior, LCM carefully selected “off-the-shelf” items that helped meet budget constraints while also demonstrating that with great care and consideration, adhering to the goals of universal design and sustainability needn’t be cost prohibitive. Building amenities include one level of below grade parking and a roof deck that compliments a “green roof.” The building has been well received, winning five major awards in addition to LEED Gold certification.
